About Morden
Morden, part of the Borough of Merton is located south-west of Mitcham and Merton. The district is formed in the grounds between St Lawrence Church and Morden Park. During the Middle Ages it was under the control of Westminster Abbey, but in 1553 it became a residential area. St Lawrence Church was rebuilt in 1636 and development was noticed, but it never really boomed, partly because during 1872 Gilliat Hatfield bought Morden Hall, which stopped most of the development and the building of houses.
Later in the 19th century the tube fares, as well as the bus station which opened in 1927 and this brought up the building of extra services and eventually it resulted in house building boom for Morden. The station developed as if it were a whole new town with shopping parades, semi-detached houses, mansion blocks and gardens.
